  1. I took a Creative Writing class with Mark several years ago and learned so much! I had always had the urge to write, but always trashed my creations because I wasn't confident in my writing. Not only did Mark help me improve my technique, but more importantly, he addressed the flaws in my writing without making me feel self-conscious (quite an accomplishment since I don't always take criticism well).

A few years after learning from Mark, I actually became a freelance copywriter for a University Press and have had some of my cover copy used on Amazon book pages. He is an extremely talented writer, editor, and teacher!

  2. This man's self evaluation is spot on: He helps with words.
But what it doesn't say is that he helps writers help themselves.

Not only does he identify and help polish a writer's strengths, but he also helps identify latent talents and gives the client the tools to exploit them.
His criticisms are both gentle and constructive, and he is always respectful of the writer's individual voice.

I've been fortunate to have him as an instructor, so I can honestly say that in addition to being a great resource, he is also a really good person.

I fully recommend working with him. In fact, I'm dreaming up ways and reasons for him help with my words again.

  3. Mark Bilbrey is an excellent writer, instructor, and human being.

While completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, I had the pleasure of studying American Poetry under Mark. I was instantly blown away by his impeccable attention to detail, and motivated by his genuine passion, and devotion to bettering his students.

Mark proposed me as a candidate for the university's literary journal, and helped me land a position as the poetry editor. Since graduation, he has stayed in touch to see how my career is shaping, written me a letter of recommendation, and vouched for me to the school district I am currently employed under.

If you are looking to improve your technical or creative writing, I highly recommend giving Mark a call!

  4. I was lucky enough to have Mark as both a teacher and a mentor for close to a year. He was funny, friendly, and kind, but more importantly also held the bar high and encouraged me to jump.

Mark knows his stuff and is more than happy to share that knowledge with others. He is always tactful in his criticism: not afraid to point out what needs fixing, but never unkind about it. That's probably my favourite of his traits.

  5. I took a poetry class with Mark at UW-Parkside, and I like to say it was like learning how to read all over again. Mark led discussions in a way that forced us to think for ourselves and get the most out of each poem as possible. I know he will use the same level of insight on each project, whether it be a sales letter or a guest blog post, to get the right message across to the reader in the most effective language.

On a personal note, I went into Mark's class with a misunderstanding and mild fear of poetry, and came out knowing that it was my genre of choice. I was always a writer, but I didn't know I was a poet until Mark's class. Two years later, I'm still writing and looking at going back to school for an MFA.

  6. Over the past year, Dr. Bilbrey has been reviewing and editing numerous papers on my behalf. He has always been very prompt and professional, leaving me not only constructive criticism but positive feedback on my progress as well. I feel that Dr. Bilbrey takes great pride in his work and pays close attention to my needs as they relate to each topic independently. I have learned a tremendous amount by working with Dr. Bilbrey and I plan on continuing to use his services and his knowledge to help build my skills and my confidence as a student and a writer. I would highly recommend Dr. Bilbrey to anyone in need of writing guidance, education or simply proof reading. Thank you very much for all your help. You have made my transition back to school more successful and a lot less stressful.

  7. Dr. Mark Bilbrey is a brilliant writer and an excellent mentor. I have worked with him in several contexts, including an independent study, a senior thesis, and an internship. Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of receiving his guidance in writing a statement of purpose for graduate school. In the four years that I have known him, I am constantly amazed, not only by his writing style, but his ability to guide others to accomplish their particular goals, whether academic or personal. I consider him my mentor and do not possess words to express how grateful I am for his guidance through the years. When he writes there is an ease that comes, not only from skill, but from a natural-born talent to convey the most complex of ideas. There is no situation that I can think of that would not benefit immensely from his prodigious skill in writing. I highly recommend him for whatever endeavors that he chooses to undertake.

  8. Mark has been helping me with comp 1 and now comp 2 and maybe a little more. He is so easy to work with, will email back and forth whenever. He has also really helped me improve my writing by seeing what he changes and why. I would highly recommended working with him when you have a paper due.

  9. Mark is working with me on the final edit of my graphic novel. He works fast, thoroughly and thoughtfully. We skyped over his edits and the discussion helped me to polish the script even more. In addition he helped to gather information (I live in Europe) about the U.S. market I would otherwise never be able to find. But besides being a 100% professional and a 100% helpful and fast it's easy and enjoyable to work with him. This is what makes a professional relationship really valuable (well, to me at least), when it's "not only" professional but when it's also enriching on a personal level. I'm very glad Mark accepted to work with me and my script, his work made and makes quite a difference! Thank you, Mark!

  10. Mark help has been of immense value. He was created a great template for my thesis and edited it at the 1st draft stage for Chicago/Turabian Style compliance. He has been prompt with completion of requested work and polite and quick to give valuable comments and advice. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of his services. –Tommy Kramer

  11. Mark was hugely instrumental in sharpening the quality of the language and the presentation of the ideas in my non-fiction book, "How to Talk Nashville." I asked Mark for light copy editing services and was lucky enough to receive much more: a skillful partner and keen intellect ready to apply his many abilities to the manuscript. We worked together (via email) for six months, and I remain grateful for his enthusiasm and contribution to the project. I'll add that I was always very happy with Mark's turnaround times and how effective he was inside of a billable hour. I recommend his services without reservation. He's a total pro.

  12. I was terrified when looking for a new editor. What if I chose the wrong wrong one for my book baby?! A friend referred me to Mark, and he put so many of my fears to rest. He was open about his process and answered all of my questions candidly. He also provided me with great advice during the editing process and was incredibly supportive when I had freak-out moments. Mark is dedicated, professional, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. He sincerely wants to help people produce quality work and become better writers.
