FAQ

How does editing work? I just give you a text document and then you give it back to me sparkling and perfect?

Well, we can certainly do it that way if you want, but many clients prefer to take a more active role in the process. The first thing we’ll do is talk about what your desires are for this particular project. Perhaps you just want basic, surface-level copy-editing. Or perhaps you’re looking for more extensive edits to the structure, style, and cohesion of the writing. I usually edit documents using the “track changes” function in my word processing program. This lets you see exactly what I’ve done and also gives you the power to “accept” or “reject” each change individually. (Or you can always simply click “accept all changes.”) This function also allows me to easily insert comments, suggestions, and questions for you in the margins. When I return the document, it’s up to you to decide if it’s finished or if there are other types of changes you’d like me to make.

I’d like to get tutoring, but I live too far away from you. Can I receive tutoring online?

I find working face-to-face to be the ideal arrangement, but working via email, Skype, or the phone can also be very productive.

Where would we meet for face-to-face tutoring?

Let's work that out individually. Ideally, I like to find a quiet, public place convenient to both of us.

Will you write an assignment for me?

Yes! Clients often hire me for writing projects. I should clarify, though, that I don't take on assignments that I suspect are intended for unethical purposes. In other words, I’m not here to help you cheat on your term papers, reports, or exams (though I can tutor you on those assignments or edit them).

Will you write or edit my résumé for me?

Absolutely. I'm not a career counselor, of course, but if you can provide the information we'll need to put together a great résumé, I'd be delighted to help write and format it.

Will you help me with the writing for my website?

I'd love to. Just keep in mind that my expertise is with the written content--the text itself. I am, unfortunately, not a graphic artist or website designer.

What are your rates? How will I be billed?

I generally charge by the hour and my rates are both reasonable and negotiable based on the assignment and the client. This link from The Editorial Freelancers Association should give you a good sense of typical rates.

I accept cash, personal checks, and Paypal or similar online services.

Why charge for editing by the hour rather than by the word, as some other editors do?

I sometimes work by the page or word, but I prefer an hourly rate because it more accurately reflects the work put into the assignment. Editing 4,000 words might take anywhere from half an hour to several hours depending on how much work needs to be done. It's important to me that my clients feel they're getting a great value out of my work. Because I have a great deal of experience, I am able to work swiftly, thus saving you money. Furthermore, I always round down to the nearest quarter hour and stop the clock for any breaks, so you're never over-charged.
